New Stories

This Town Will Stand is a heartfelt musical storybook created especially for the young people of Muskegon. Through music, story, and images, it introduces children to the generations who came before them—the families whose hard work, courage, and hopes helped build a community along the shores of Lake Michigan.

But this is more than a story about Muskegon’s past. It is a story about Muskegon’s future—and the young people who will shape it.

As children discover how an earlier generation dreamed, struggled, worked together, and built a community, they are invited to see themselves as the next chapter of that story. Muskegon belongs to them, too. Its history is their inheritance, its community is theirs to strengthen, and its future will someday be in their hands.

Created as part of the evolving Muskegon Lumber Queen Celebration, This Town Will Stand connects generations with a simple message for every young person who experiences it:

Others built this community for you. Someday, you will help build it for those who come after you.

What would you do if your big chance finally came?

Fred’s Big Chance is a six-chapter adventure that takes young readers back to the days when Muskegon was a booming lumber town—and puts a young person right in the middle of the story.

Fred Hansen is growing up in a community filled with lumber camps, sawmills, ships, hardworking families, and people dreaming about what Muskegon might someday become. When Fred gets a chance to prove himself, he discovers that growing up takes more than being brave. It takes determination, loyalty, good choices—and sometimes the courage to do what is right.

Inspired by the beloved Muskegon Lumber Queen musical, Fred’s Big Chance gives children an entertaining way to discover the people, places, and spirit of an important chapter in their hometown’s history.

It’s Muskegon history told as an adventure—and this time, a kid gets to be the hero.
